IUI- Intra Uterine Insemination

What is Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI)?
 

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a method to help couples have a baby. During IUI, the sperm from the partner or a donor is placed directly into the woman's uterus with a special tube. This makes it easier for the sperm to reach the egg and increases the chances of getting pregnant. It's a straightforward and gentle way to assist couples who want to become parents but might need some extra help.
 

The procedure helps ensure that enough healthy sperm are available near the fallopian tubes when the egg is released from the ovary during ovulation.

Process of IUI
 

  1. Ovulation Monitoring: Before the IUI procedure, the woman's menstrual cycle is closely monitored. This includes tracking hormone levels and performing ultrasound scans to determine when she is about to ovulate.
     

  2. Sperm Collection and Preparation: Sperm is collected, either from the male partner or a sperm donor. The collected sperm is then prepared in the laboratory. The goal is to concentrate the healthy and active sperm, removing any non-motile or immobile sperm.

  3. Insemination :On the day of ovulation or when ovulation is imminent, the prepared sperm is inserted into the woman's uterus using a thin, flexible catheter. This is a painless and non-invasive procedure.

  4. Rest and Monitoring: After the insemination, the woman rests for a short period. There might be some mild cramping, but it usually subsides quickly. The woman can resume her normal activities after the rest period.

  5. Pregnancy Test: About two weeks after the IUI procedure, a pregnancy test is performed to determine if the procedure was successful. If the woman becomes pregnant, the fertilized egg implants in the uterus and starts to grow.

Success rate of Intra Uterine Insemination
 

The success rate of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) can vary widely depending on various factors, including the age of the woman, the cause of infertility, the quality of sperm, the number of cycles attempted, and the overall health of both partners. On average, the success rate of IUI per cycle ranges from about 10% to 20%.

However, success rates may increase with multiple cycles of IUI. If IUI is combined with ovulation induction medications, the success rate may increase to 20-25% per cycle.
